Dear Globe and Mail

I submitted the following letter to the editor of the Globe and Mailย today:

Dearย Editor,

While introducing a mostly excellent weekend package on climate change, Globe and Mail Editor-in- chief Edward Greenspon says, โ€œWe are in the business of promoting debate, notย dogma.โ€

That’s informative, but a little unnerving. Naive Globe readers might have thought their favorite paper’s mission was to provide accurate and impartial information – not merely stir theย pot.

Confusion over climate change can be attributed to two things. One is a well-funded corporate campaign to deny the science – a campaign that ExxonMobil has recently agreed to stop funding. The other is the media’s tendency to report โ€œboth sidesโ€ of every story – to promote debate rather thanย understanding.

Greenspon says, โ€œIntuitively the country seems to have come to a conclusion that global warming is real and of importance.โ€ Let’s hope that, in the future, Canadians will be able to rely more on conscientious journalism (as from the Globe’s Martin Mittlestaedt) and less on intuition when making major decisions about the future of the country and theย world.

Sincerely,

Jim Hoggan
