Lord Christopher Monckton, infamous for his “Hitler Youth” comments at the Copenhagen climate summit, is among the guest speakers at this week’s Tax Day Tea Party in Washington, DC.  Organized by FreedomWorks, the sister organization of Americans for Prosperity, the Tax Day Tea Party at the Washington Monument will also feature appearances from FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey and President Matt Kibbe, right wing publisher Andrew Breitbart, Texas Congressman Ron Paul and Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson.

With a cast of characters this deep, sparks are sure to fly.

Lord Monckton has continued the crazed rampage he started at the Americans For Prosperity event at the Copenhagen climate summit, where he repeatedly called American college students advocating for clean energy the “Hitler Youth” and “Nazis.” Monckton took it way too far when he told Jewish student Ben Wessel, whose grandparents escaped the Holocaust, “I am not going to shake the hand of Hitler youth.” 
Despite extensive video evidence, Monckton went on to lie to the Associated Press, claiming that he never uttered those words.  More recently, Monckton called President Obama a “monster” during his speech at a GOP fundraiser in Wisconsin, which followed another of his paid appearances for Americans for Prosperity.

Conservative mouthpiece Andrew Breitbart, another featured speaker at the Tax Day Tea Party, defended the racist behavior of tea partiers at the March 20 protest at the Capitol against healthcare reform, a grim day when a tea partier spat on black Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) as he walked into the Capitol to vote.  Breitbart went so far as to suggest that two other black Democrats, Reps. André Carson of Indiana and John Lewis of Georgia, had made up their claims that protesters subjected them to racial epithets during the protest.  “They were shouting the N-word,” Carson told reporters. “It was like a page out of a time machine.”

Conservative commentator and blogger Andrew Breitbart has accused Lewis and Carson of fabricating claims of racial epithets to “create the impression that the ‘tea party’ movement is racist.” He initially offered $10,000 to the United Negro College Fund for video evidence of the slurs. It’s now $100,000. “They didn’t expect someone would challenge them on this,” Breitbart told me. “What idiot would challenge John Lewis,” a civil rights movement icon? “Well, I’m that idiot.”

Notably absent from the list of speakers at the Tax Day Tea Party are brothers David and Charles Koch of Koch Industries, whose family foundations have bankrolled Americans for Prosperity to the tune of over $5 million since 2005, according to a Greenpeace analysis.   David Koch – the second richest man in New York behind Michael Bloomberg – founded Americans for Prosperity and continues to serve as its chairman.  The Kochs also funded AFP’s predecessor organization, Citizens for a Sound Economy Foundation, which received extensive backing from ExxonMobil as well.  In 2003, Citizens for a Sound Economy splintered, and soon formed the two new Astroturf groups, FreedomWorks and AFP.

FreedomWorks, led by former US House Majority Leader Dick Armey, is the Astroturf group behind the fake grassroots launch of the Tea Party movement, documented by Paul Krugman of the New York Times and the Huffington Post’s Citizen Journalism Unit.

With speakers like Breitbart and Monckton, the Tax Day Tea Party will not likely be a family-friendly event.  Will Monckton continue to defy Godwin’s law of Nazi anologies?  Will Breitbart again arrogantly defend the racist acts of tea partiers?
