  • Ph.D., Geology. University of Kansas, 1964. [1]
  • M.S., Paleontology minor. University of Kansas, 1961. [1]
  • B.S., Geology. Syracuse University, 1958. [1]

Gerhard is a retired geologist from the University of Kansas. He has government and industry experience in petroleum exploration, research and exploration program management, oil and gas regulation, and reservoir geology.

His profile at Thomasson Partner Associates, Inc. describes him as as an Honorary Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, past president and Honorary Member of that society’s Division of Environmental Geosciences, an Honorary Member of the Association of American State Geologists, and an Honorary Member of the Kansas Geological Society.

Stance on Climate Change

“[S]ome argue that the Arctic is melting, with the warmest-ever temperatures. One should ask, ‘How long is ever?’ The answer is since 1979. And then ask, “Is it still warming?” The answer is unequivocally ‘No.’ Earth temperatures are cooling.” [2]

“Global temperature peaked in 1998 on the current 60-80 year cycle, and has been episodically declining ever since. This cooling absolutely falsifies claims that human carbon dioxide emissions are a controlling factor in Earth temperature.” [2]

Key Quotes

“We also know a lot about Earth temperature changes:

1. “Global temperature changes naturally all of the time, in both directions and at many scales of intensity.

2.“The warmest year in the U.S. in the last century was 1934, not 1998. The U.S. has the best and most extensive temperature records in the world.

3. “Global temperature peaked in 1998 on the current 60-80 year cycle, and has been episodically declining ever since. This cooling absolutely falsifies claims that human carbon dioxide emissions are a controlling factor in Earth temperature.

4. “Voluminous historic records demonstrate the Medieval Climate Optimum (MCO) was real and that the “hockey stick” graphic that attempted to deny that fact was at best bad science. “The MCO was considerably warmer than the end of the 20th century.

5. “During the last 100 years, temperature has both risen and fallen, including the present cooling. All the changes in temperature of the last 100 years are in normal historic ranges, both in absolute value and, most importantly, rate of change.” [3]

Key Deeds

February 23, 2017

Lee Gerhard was a signatory of a petition (PDF) organized by Richard Lindzen of the Cato Institute urging President Donald Trump to pull the United States out of the United Nations international convention on climate change (UNFCCC). [5]

In just a few weeks, more than 300 eminent scientists and other qualified individuals from around the world have signed the petition below,” Lindzen wrote in the letter. [5]

DeSmog investigated the list, and found that only a small handful of the signatories could be considered “even remotely ‘qualified’ or ‘eminent’ — but not in the field of climate science.” The list included individuals “interested in climate,” and one signatory who only identified as an “emailer who wished to sign the petition” while some signers provided no affiliation or address whatsoever. [6]

Gerhard is listed as an “expert reviewer” of the last two IPCC reports, representing the Kansas Geological Survey, University of Kansas. [4]

May 20, 1996–April 1, 1997

Engaged in a debate titled “The Wernarian Syndrome: Aspects of global climate change: an analysis of assumptions, data, and conclusions: Debate on Global Climate Change” at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Annual Meeting in San Diego, California.

Gerhard performed the same debate at the Tulsa Geological Society. [4]

March 21–24, May 21 1999

Spoke on “Climate Science” at the Ohio Oil and Gas Association on March 24, 1999.

Also spoke on “Climate Science” at Leadership Kansas, Pittsburg Kansas on May 21, 1999. [4]

April 1999

Spoke on “Climate Change” at the Division of Professional Affairs Forum of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. [4]

Aug, 1999; October 15, 1999; November 5, 1999

Was the “all-convention luncheon speaker” at the AAPG Rocky Mountain Section where he spoke on “Climate Change: Reality Check.”

Gerhard gave a similarly-titled speech at  the University of North Dakota Leonard Symposium on October 15, 1999 and then at the University of South Florida on November 5. [4]

February 24, 2000–March 29, 2001

Gerhard spoke on the “Geological Constraints on Global Climate” at the Kentucky Geological Survey in February 24.

He gave the same speech at the Colorado School of mines on March 23, at the AAPG annual meeting in New Orleans on April 16, at the University of Oklahoma on March 29, 2001, at the University of Wisconson-Platteville on April 5, 2001, at the Fort Worth Geological Society on November 12, 2001, and at the Wyoming Geological society on November 16, 2001. [4]

*The AAPG has questioned the science behind human caused climate change and their statement on climate change is noncommital:

“In recent decades global temperatures have risen. Yet, our planet has been far warmer and cooler than today many times in the geologic past, including the past 10,000 years.”

Lee C. Gerhard has published mainly on the subject of resource geology in the oil and gas sector.  Many of Gerhard’s publications on climate appear in journals published by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists:
