Background

James Delingpole is an English columnist and anti-windfarm activist who formerly blogged for The Daily Telegraph and now writes for The Spectator and the far-right news site, Breitbart. Delingpole has described himself as a “libertarian conservative” and climate change skeptic. According to Delingpole’s website, Jamesdelingpole.com (now Delingpoleworld.com), Delingpole’s “dislikes” include “the ‘global warming’ myth” and “The European Socialist Superstate”. [7]

He was awarded the 2010 Bastiat Prize for online journalism by the free-market International Policy Network, a group that, according to public 990 forms, has received over $1 million from the secretive Donors Capital Fund, and $390,000 from oil giant ExxonMobil. [8]

Delingpole was particularly vocal during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. In an article for The Spectator Australia, he described how he had contracted COVID-19 and that he felt “bloody great” for subsequently getting “a degree of immunity”. In the same article, Delingpole explained how he did not cancel any engagements even when he believed he had the virus and wrote that he attended “various parties” after a debate at Durham University, saying: “it’s possible I infected lots of undergraduates”. In January 2022, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that Delingpole had taken part in a streamed conversation with Colin Robertson, who the SPLC referred to as a “white nationalist influencer”. [137]

Delingpole wrote in Breitbart: [91]

“Meanwhile in the real world, no convincing evidence whatsoever has emerged to support the threadbare theory that anthropogenic CO2 is causing the planet to warm in ways which are dangerous or unprecedented. Delingpole argued that environmentalists were celebrating the coronavirus pandemic who were treating COVID-19 as a “blueprint” for a “new world order”. He wrote: [102]

In an article criticising a feature on the 10th anniversary of the so-called “climategate” scandal produced by the BBC, who Delingpole called “one of the key promoters of the man-made global warming scare”, Delingpole wrote: [91]

“It really doesn’t matter in what order you rearrange the Climategate emails. You get the same result every time: a bunch of second-raters bullying dissenters, troughing lavish grants, racking up air miles on conference freebies, cooking the books, manipulating the evidence, torturing the data till it screams in order to make man-made global warming look like a much more significant and well-understood problem than it actually is.” [91]

In the same article, Delingpole repeated the allegation that the TV crews of naturalist Sir David Attenborough, who he described as a “doddery old Malthusian”, had “drive[n] walruses off cliffs and then blame[d] it on climate change” in a recent documentary on climate change. Delingpole also used the opportunity to promote a crowdfunding campaign called “Stop BBC Bias” launched by David Keighley, founder of the anti-BBC, climate science denying group, News-watch. [91]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart criticising a study in the climate science journal Nature Climate Change which had called for strengthening decarbonisation targets, after the study’s lead author, Corinne le Quere, told The Guardian that: “We need a cut in emissions of about the size of the fall [from the lockdowns] every two years, but by completely different methods.” [135] [136]

Delingpole stated that measures required to achieve this level of decarbonisation would be “almost certainly unpopular with people who quite enjoy the trappings of 21st-century life and would rather not be compelled to go back to the Dark Ages.”

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart claiming that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s policies aimed at decarbonising the economy through a “Green Industrial Revolution,” were “hitting the poor hardest.” [132]

The article quoted John Constable, energy editor of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, Britain’s most prominent climate science denying organisation, who criticised measures implemented by Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kwasi Kwarteng intended to alleviate fuel poverty, which included a £140 discount for vulnerable households. Constable stated: “Mr Kwarteng’s measures are wholly inadequate, barely scratching the surface of the electricity bill issue, and leaving the cost of living problem caused by his climate policies quite untouched.”

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart asserting that Germany’s renewable energy sector had collapsed due to competition from China, costing thousands of jobs. He wrote: “The ‘green jobs’ promised by everyone from President Joe Biden to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson as one of the benefits of their proposed Net Zero revolutions are a myth. Or, if you prefer, a blatant lie.” The article concluded: “Net Zero is a looming disaster and the politicians steering us towards it are doing so with their eyes wide open – and their tongues as forked as a snake’s.” [127]

Delingpole also cited a report from the Global Warming Policy Foundation entitled, “The Myth of Green Jobs,” which claimed that “there are no sound economic arguments to support an assertion that green energy policies will increase the total level of employment in the medium or longer term when we hold macroeconomic conditions constant.” [128]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart which disputed the existence of a climate emergency, describing warnings about the severity of climate change as “doom-mongering,” and a “scare narrative.” He stated: “It is an article of faith for the globalist elite and their useful idiots in the media, in politics, in business, and the entertainment [sic] that the world is on course for climate disaster which only radical and costly international action can prevent.” [123]

The article cited a report written by science policy analyst Dr Indur Goklany for the Global Warming Policy Foundation which disputed the negative consequences of increased levels of atmospheric CO2, stating: “The detrimental effects of carbon dioxide and fossil fuels are overwhelmed by other concurrent changes that are beneficial.” [124]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart criticising the government’s ten point plan for a ‘Green Industrial Revolution,’ which he described as “eco-fascist crap,” and “far-left nonsense.” He argued that as a result of the plan, Britain’s landscape would be “ravaged with solar panels and bat-chomping, bird-slicing eco-crucifixes.” [125]

Delingpole described the imposition of environmentalist policies as undemocratic, writing: “Where green issues are concerned, there is a massive democratic deficit — between the green hell that a narrow elite want to impose on you and the old normal which is what most people actually want,” arguing that “unrepresentative extremists like the hair-shirt loons of Extinction Rebellion,” had dictated government policy. 

He also cited a report written by researcher and commentator Ben Pile for the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which criticised the UK’s Climate Assembly, a focus group assembled from UK citizens to discuss the response to climate change. The report stated: “the Assembly was convened by political campaigning and lobbying groups, funded by special interests. Its composition did not reflect that of the broader public.” [126]

Delingpole wrote an article for The Conservative Woman disputing the veracity of official UK government statistics showing that the UK had recorded 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 on January 25, 2020. In the same article he argued that politically-motivated scientists had also produced dishonest, unreliable data on climate change, which he described as a “natural process to which we can all adapt easily and inexpensively,” rather than a man-made phenomenon. Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart in which he claimed that Western environmentalists had hypocritically condoned China’s continued use of fossil fuels, stating: “while the West bleats about carbon emissions targets, sustainability and Net Zero, China is expanding its economy rapidly.” [116]

Delingpole cited a paper written by “China watcher” Patricia Adams in the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which asserted that the CCP “exercises the ability to direct the agenda that the environmentalists will carry out via the Communist government’s de facto control over the use of funds,” characterising Western environmentalists as “China’s useful idiots.” [112]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart criticising Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans for a ‘Green Industrial Revolution,’ as Johnson prepared for Britain to host the COP26 UN climate conference. He wrote: [113]

“Possibly this is good news for Johnson, who, as a reward for this nonsense, may now get more nookie from his eco-activist girlfriend Carrie Symonds (aka Princess Nut Nut). But it will be an absolute disaster for the country at large, as a number of recent reports and articles make clear.”

Delingpole cited a study by the US fossil fuel-funded Institute for Energy Research, which characterised initiatives to create green jobs as “terribly economically counterproductive,” in addition to a blog post by climate science sceptic Paul Homewood, who also criticised the government’s proposals, stating: [114] [115]

In an article for Breitbart entitled, “Report: Western Environmentalists Are the Chinese Communists’ Useful Idiots,” Delingpole cited a Global Warming Policy Foundation report written by Patricia Adams entitled, “the Red and the Green: China’s useful idiots,” which characterised Western environmentalists as mouthpieces for President Xi Jinping. Delingpole stated: “In reality, the Chinese communists are only interested in environmentalism insofar as it weakens idiot Western nations as they destroy their own economies with needlessly inflated energy prices.” [111] [112]

In an article for Breitbart, Delingpole commented on an Independent article which suggested that snow could cease to exist in Britain due to the impacts of climate change. Delingpole wrote: “But now, bizarrely, the Climate Industrial Complex has decided to revive this much-mocked claim in a new BBC documentary designed to persuade us, once and for all, that climate change is real and that it is oh so definitely worth destroying the economy and curtailing our freedoms to counteract the horrors of a snowman-free future.” [108] [109]

Delingpole cited a blog post written for ConservativeHome by Andrew Montford, Deputy Director of the GWPF. Montford stated: “Householders will also have to swallow a doubling of the cost of motoring and a tripling of domestic fuel bills. The price of everything will soar.” [110]

In an interview with Sky News Australia, Delingpole criticised Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2030, asserting that it formed part of a “globalist, leftist takeover.” Delingpole stated that “they (the Conservative Party) claim to care about those working class voters in the North and the Midlands, who gave their voters to the Conservative Party for the first time, and yet I can’t imagine a single one of those voters is yearning to have their car taken away from them to be replaced by an electric car costing £30,000 or more that they could never dream of affording. In an article for Breitbart, Delingpole compared a graph cited by Boris Johnson’s science advisors predicting a second wave of COVID-19 to Professor Michael Mann’s hockey stick graph, stating: “I share this scepticism towards what some are describing as the latest update of Project Fear — and which others are calling Boris’s Hockey Stick”, and that it is an artefact that has much more to do with propaganda than honest science”.

Delingpole referenced work by climate science deniers Steve McIntyre, Ross McKitrick, and Andrew Montford to support his claim that Mann’s graph was unreliable. [104]

In an article for Breitbart entitled, ‘Australia Invites High School Dropout Greta Thunberg into the Classroom’, Delingpole stated that, “Thunberg is a teenage school drop out who knows nothing about climate change other than what she has picked up from left-wing newspapers and propaganda sites, and from movies like Ice Age 2.” [105]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart criticising the government’s 10-point plan for a ‘Green Industrial Revolution,’ which he described as a “looming disaster caused by a mass outbreak of green groupthink at virtually every level of the Boris Johnson administration,” and “eco-bilge.” [129]

Elsewhere in the article, he stated: “A green industrial revolution is a bit like the original industrial revolution, except for one or two crucial differences: instead of boosting prosperity, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth, it does the exact opposite.”

Delingpole cited a study in the Global Warming Policy Foundation written by its energy editor, John Constable, which described the government’s plans to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050 as “deeply unwise,” and a “facile error.” [130]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart commenting on Michael Moore’s documentary, ‘Planet of the Humans’, in which he stated: 

“sure, the film says nothing that I haven’t been saying at Breitbart and elsewhere for over a decade: that renewables are expensive, environmentally destructive, do not reduce fossil fuel usage, do not reduce CO2 emissions, kill birds and bats, ruin views, despoil nature, enrich crony capitalists at the expense of ordinary energy users, etc.” Delingpole also claimed that, “far from being ‘clean’ energy or ‘green’ energy, renewables are in fact a dirty, ugly, planet-destroying failure.” [106]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart which disputed the accuracy of scientific research warning of the dangers of COVID-19, citing scientific experts’ alleged lack of accuracy concerning climate change as grounds for his scepticism. He wrote: [131]

“The fact that computer models are unreliable — often based on the junkiest of junk data inputs; programmed with the shonkiest and most politically motivated algorithms, put together by people you wouldn’t trust to run a bath let alone dictate government policy — is the single most important thing you need to know about the entire global warming/climate change scam.” He added: “This was the basis of the 2009 Climategate scandal: that the scientists were pushing a radical, disruptive, economically damaging agenda without any solid supporting evidence.”

Delingpole also criticised the “scientific establishment” that had warned of the dangers of both climate change and COVID-19, characterising them as “arrogant, intellectually and morally corrupt,” and “driven by politics, money and power not by honest science.”

April 2, 2020

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart commenting on the postponement of the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference, originally due to take place in Glasgow in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He wrote: [133]

“It’s good for Boris Johnson’s government: no longer does it have to go through the motions of pretending to a sceptical electorate that ‘climate change’ is the biggest threat to the planet,” adding: “It’s also an acknowledgement of the growing difficulties that the green movement is going to face in a post-coronavirus world where there will simply be no spare cash to spend on imaginary problems which exist only in the realm of dubious computer models.

Delingpole also cited a tweet from the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which said: “As climate hysteria is dying a slow death from Coronavirus and the public is no longer captured, green lobbyists are frantically reassuring their clients that the pandemic will be good for the climate industrial complex.” [134]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart eulogising the late scientist Freeman Dyson, who had argued that increased greenhouse gas emissions could have positive effects. Delingpole stated that he had been “unpersoned for taking the ‘wrong’ view on climate change,” adding: “as far as the left-liberal MSM is concerned, all his achievements are to be considered null and void just because he didn’t parrot the correct green pieties about carbon dioxide.” [121]

Delingpole also cited a report written by policy analyst Dr Indur Goklany in the Global Warming Policy Foundation, the foreword for which had been written by Dyson. It disputed the negative consequences of increased amounts of atmospheric CO2, stating: “the non-climatic effects of carbon dioxide as a sustainer of wildlife and crop plants are enormously beneficial,” adding:  “the possibly harmful climatic effects of carbon dioxide have been greatly exaggerated.” [122]

An IndieGoGo campaign was launched to crowd-fund a climate change film by James Delingpole and Martin Durkin, director of the 2007 Channel 4 programme, The Great Global Warming Swindle. [99], [100]

In a promotional video for the documentary, called Climate My Ass: The Green War on Freedom, Delingpole said that the film would “show how the folks behind this climate consensus have a powerful material and professional vested interest in keeping the climate bandwagon going”. [101]

In a Breitbart article, Delingpole wrote that Boris Johnson’s net-zero targets were an “uncosted, ill-considered, virtue-signalling disaster” and that the British economy would have to commit “energy suicide” to reach the targets. This was published the same day that the Global Warming Policy Foundation, the UK’s most prominent climate science denial group, published a series of reports claiming that the 2050 targets would cost the UK economy in excess of £3 trillion. The GWPF reports and subsequent coverage were strongly criticised for being misleading. [98]

January 11, 2020

Delingpole wrote an article for the Spectator about the ongoing bushfires in Australia, which he argued had “nothing to do with ‘climate change’ whatsoever”.

He said this season’s fires were “exacerbated by two man-made factors: arson and the ongoing failure by government and local authorities to clear the scrub, underbrush and hyper-inflammable eucalpyts, which have turned what should have been routine burns into raging infernos”. [94]

October 25, 2019

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart praising US President Donald Trump‘s recent announcement that he would follow through on his pledge to take the US out of the Paris Agreement on climate change at the end of 2020. Stating the move could be Trump’s “most significant” achievement and quoting the late Christopher Booker, he called the international agreement “a power grab – a two-pronged assault on America’s global hegemony as an independent, fossil-fuel energy superpower”. Delingpole attended protests in London organised by climate activist group Extinction Rebellion, who he described as “posturing, deluded, ‘planet-saving’ pests” and “soap-shunning losers”. He interviewed anti-renewables activist Michael Shellenberger for the same Breitbart article. [92]

Delingpole wrote an article in memory of Christopher Booker, calling him the “world’s greatest climate sceptic” and someone who “recognised that across the ages madness has run in cycles, and that every stupid idea – from the Taiping rebellion to Nazism to Maoism – has its day during which the warnings of the sane are ignored. The great global warming scam is just another example of this phenomenon.” Delingpole begins the article by saying he and Booker had “weekly phone chats”. [89]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart about an “undercover” trip he made to Glastonbury music festival, in which he called the recent decision by the UK to set a “net zero” emissions target a “suicidal project”, ending the piece: [88]

In an article for Breitbart, Delingpole called a report by Sky News detailing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by different countries historically an “excruciatingly embarrassing piece of eco-propaganda” and described Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg as “a 16-year old autistic kid in pigtails”. Delingpole interviewed Ronan Connolly on his podcast Delingpod. Connolly is an “independent scientist” whose website GlobalWarmingSolved has published articles disputing the causal link between climate change and extreme weather, and who has co-written a paper with climate science denier Willie Soon, cited by the Global Warming Policy Foundation. [117],[118], [119]

Connolly disputed the veracity of reports documenting a recent increase in global temperatures, stating: 

“when you are trying to calculate global temperatures, if you are using a station that is located in an urban area now, say Paris or London […] you will detect this warming from the growth in urbanisation, which is not representative of the surrounding countryside,” referring to this as “urbanisation bias.” 

Connolly also argued that:

Delingpole appeared on the BBC politics show, This Week, arguing for a “no deal” Brexit. During the discussion, he admitted: “we’re going to take a hit, but it’s a hit worth taking.” [84]

When challenged on how Britain would secure a good trade deal with the EU after leaving, he replied: “I don’t think it really matters that much… These things can be sorted out. The chap who’s in charge of the shipping at Calais says it’s going to be fine.” [85]

Delingpole wrote an article for Breitbart about a recently released report by the UN‘s IPCC into the difference between limiting warming to 1.5C and 2C. He described the report as “the usual farrago of dubious science, wailing hysteria and worryingly eco-fascistic policy prescriptions” and quoted Benny Peiser of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, as well as referencing work by Rupert Darwall and the Cooler Heads Coalition. [95]

April 2018

Delingpole wrote a double-page splash for the Daily Mail entitled ‘The Colossal Con Trick’, criticising wind energy “propaganda” which he says supports an “unviable” industry. In the article, he quotes John Constable, Energy Editor at the climate science denial thinktank, the Global Warming Policy Foundation, and Professor Gordon Hughes, who wrote reports for the thinktank in 2012.

Delingpole also claims Nazis pioneered the technology, writing that “wind power was all the rage among Nazis”, including “Hitler’s favourite commando, Otto Skorzeny.”

“For a real Oxbridge education you have to go to Durham,” Delingpole said, opening his speech. Palatinate reported that Delingpole likened Brexit to “taking down the Death Star” and being “given the keys to our prison doors.”  [81]

“It was the first vote I’d ever cast in my life that I felt really, really counted for something,” Delingpole said. He described himself as a “a man of the people… the people of the North, the people of the countryside” (he was educated in Oxbridge and attended private schools), while he described those who opposed Brexit as “corporate lawyers, bankers, quangocrats, [and] people who work for Greenpeace.”  [81]

Durham students voted to support the motion “This House Regrets Brexit.” According to the event description on social media, the debate included opposition speakers Peter Lilley and Steven Woolfe. Proposition speakers included Professor Brendan Simms of Cambridge University, Conservative MP Anna Soubry, and Labour Peer Lord Adonis. [82]

Delingpole published an article claiming to prove that climatologists had manipulated data to exaggerate the threat of global warming. [78]

Snopes debunked the Breitbart article, noting it was based on an “extremely flawed study […]  written by an ex-Fiat engineer publishing under an assumed name with no formal training in sea level data who is infamous within the climate community for pushing a high volume of questionable studies in journals desperate for submissions.” [79]

The paper Delingpole cited was written by Albert Parker (which Snopes describes as an ex-Fiat engineer with no university accreditation) and Cliff Ollier, a retired Australian geologist. [79]

John Church, a sea level expert at Australia’s University of New South Wales and an IPCC author, described the paper: [79]

“Parker and Ollier dismiss this work by PSMSL saying it is incorrect and arbitrary. However, they provide absolutely no information to support their allegations. Instead they make up their own adjustments to the sea level record so that the trend over the series is minimal.”

Writing at Breitbart, Delingpole claimed “Climate alarmists have finally admitted that they’ve got it wrong on global warming,” pointing to a paper in Nature Geoscience. Delingpole quoted climate change denier Benny Peiser, who described the study as a “landmark” moment: [75]

“It’s the first official confirmation we’ve had that CO2 is not as big a driver of climate change as the computer models have claimed; and it’s the first official admission that the planet is not warming dangerously,” Peiser said.

As reported in a Carbon Brief fact check, the study’s authors themselves disagreed with the conclusions reached by the media: [76]

“A number of media reports have asserted that our [study] indicates that global temperatures are not rising as fast as predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and hence that action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is no longer urgent. Both assertions are false. Our results are entirely in line with the IPCC’s 2013 prediction that temperatures in the 2020s would be 0.9-1.3 degrees above pre-industrial [levels],” lead author Dr. Richard Millar and Myles Allen said in a statement. [77]

Writing at Breitbart, Delingpole shared a graph by Steven Goddard, AKA Tony Heller, claiming “All of recent U.S. warming has been faked by NOAA.” [69]

“You don’t need to be a scientist to see the hoax here: it’s there in blue and red,” Delingpole wrote. [69]

Heller originally wrote at The Deplorable Climate Science Blog that “the data is simply fake” and that since 1990, “The measured NOAA data shows no warming.” [70]

Apart from himself, Heller does not cite any external sources to explain how he reached his conclusion. However, he signs off with a final statement that “This is the biggest and most cynical scam in science history.” [70]

August 22, 2017

James Delingpole, among others, promoted a study by John Abbott and Jennifer Marohasy, both senior fellows at the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) in Australia. “Most global warming is natural and even if there had been no Industrial Revolution current global temperatures would be almost exactly the same as they are now, a study has found,” Delingpole wrote at Breitbart. [63], [73]

As Graham Readfearn reported at The Guardian, Marohasy also wrote about the study at the Spectator and at her own blog, claming that the research had shown recent global warming to be natural. The Drudge Report also linked to the article. Readfearn, who noted that the writers themselves did not consult other climate scientists on the paper, contacted five. “They variously summarised the research as “junk science” and seriously flawed.” [72], [74]

Readfearn also noted that Abbott had claimed an academic affiliation with James Cook University that, “according to that university, had expired more than six months before the research was submitted to the journal.” [72]

Marohasy rejoined the IPA after being terminated from her position at the Central Queensland University (CQU) on July 1, 2015. “Indeed universities can be so political, and in modern Australia so intolerant of dissent,” Marohasy commented on her website. The IPA, which is one of the largest promotors of climate change denial in Australia, does not disclose funding. However, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that about a quarter of IPA‘s $2 million in annual funding comes from corporations with a direct stake in the climate change debate. [64], [65]

Delingpole claims the Abbot-Marohasy study, published in the soon-to-be discontinued journalGeoResJ, “contradicts the claims of alarmist scientists at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that “man made” global warming is a worrying and dangerous phenomenon.” [66], [71]

One scientist disagreed with the conclusion of the study, describing it as “essentially just a complicated curve-fitting exercise” and “simply nonsense.” He outlines one “key problem” with the approach of Marohasy and Abbot: [67]

“[Y]ou can’t try and understand what causes our climate to vary, or how it might vary in future, using machine learning alone. Even though our climate is complex, it is still a physical system and we do understand the underlying physical processes quite well. You do need to take this into account. […]” [67]

Replying on Twitter, climate scientist Gavin Schmidt had this to say:

Delingpole interviewed climate change denier Christopher Horner on his “Delingpole podcast.” According to Delingpole, reporting on the interview at Breitbart, Horner “has the perfect insider perspective to explain what’s going on in the White House” due to his position on Trump’s EPA transition team. “No other GOP presidential candidate – not Rubio, not Cruz – would have delivered on climate change in the same way as Trump has. They would, quite simply, have been overwhelmed by the swamp,” Delingpole declared. [62]

“Here’s what I firmly believe,” Horner said. “I’m convinced that the penny dropped for others, as it did me, when Donald Trump gave his editorial board interview to the Washington Post. It’s often mocked – where he said: ‘I’m not a big believer in global warming. Not a big believer.’ And then he continued in a very important way. And if you follow the way Donald Trump speaks it’s perfectly clear what he’s saying. He said, ‘You know, a lot of people are making a lot of money off of this.’ 

“He was not saying this as a politician says it. (‘And if we use spoons not shovels we can create even more jobs…’ That sort of playground thinking is very common among politicians.) And whatever anybody thinks about Donald Trump you can be confident of this. At 21, at Le Cirque, somewhere at some point, somebody who is making a killing off the rents of the global warming industry laughed it up a little too loudly or once too many times around Donald Trump. Because what he said to the Washington Post was ‘You’re robbing Peter to pay Paul. Goldmans is making a killing out of this.’ That’s what I heard him say. Politicians normally fall for this. But not Donald. Instead – what I heard him say ‘They’re making a lot of money out of this’ – he said: ‘You’re propping up, sometimes even standing up industries, to transfer taxpayer money to them. And he didn’t go into Energy Poverty or the Economic Drag or the inefficiency or the opportunity cost or the 2.2 jobs. He just said: ‘You’re robbing Peter to pay Paul. A lot of people are making a lot of money off this.’ And to me he was saying ‘This is something of a scam.’ You can take his Chinese hoax comments, you can take hoax in any context but the fact is the way they’re playing out the global warming industry there are many scams involved and I think he was aware of this. I do think at one point somebody laughed a little too loudly…” [62]

Delingpole wrote a Breitbart piece titled “Only Gullible Fools Believe that the Great Barrier Reef Is Dying” where he claims “The Great Barrier Reef isn’t in the remotest danger,” and that those who believe it is are “pillocks,” “idiots,” and “eco loons.” [57]

Delingpole primarily criticized a study published in Nature by Terry Hughes of James Cook University in Queensland, who Delingpole calls “the main man behind the scare.” Hughes had examined 2016 bleaching, as well as the previous incidences in 2002 and 1998. [58]

DeSmog reported Delingpole primarily relied on the arguments of Jim Steele, who claimed the Hughes study was based on “aerial surveys” that “cannot discriminate between the various causes of bleaching.” However, the Nature study had stated analysis was based on “aerial and underwater surveys” as well as satellite data. Hughes told DeSmog by email: [58]

“Steele needs to actually read our Nature paper. We reported the extent of bleaching, measured both from the air and underwater — the latter on 150 reefs.

Mass bleaching due to thermal stress is the only mechanism that can turn more than 1000km of a reef system white in the course of a few weeks. 

In the Nature paper, we show the relationship between thermal stress experienced on each reef and the amount of bleaching recorded underwater by divers. We also ground-truthed the accuracy of the aerial scores, and found them to be highly reliable.

We also showed that satellite measurements of heat exposure matched the aerial bleaching scores as well as the underwater scores. The south didn’t bleach in 2016 because it was cool, the north was the most severely bleached because it was hottest.” [58]

Delingpole had written another piece on March 20 titled “Great Barrier Reef Still Not Dying, Whatever Washington Post Says,” where he described mass coral bleaching as “fake news.” [59]

“Is the Great Barrier Reef dying due to climate change caused by man’s selfishness and greed?” Delingpole asked, then giving a list of people and groups who he thinks will answer yes, including “the Guardian” and “any marine biologist”.

“Have they been out there personally – as I have – to check. No of course not,” he adds. [59]

“It’s as though we’ve reached peak denial,” Graham Readfearn wrote at The Guardian. He noted Delingpole’s only evident trip to examine the reef appeared to have happened 10 years prior, in April 2012 at a single area of the reef system roughly the size of Italy. [60], [61]

Writing at Breitbart, Delingpole worried that Ivanka Trump may be influencing her father’s views on climate change: [54]

“[Trump] has toned the phrasing of an Executive Order so that it no longer includes derogatory comments about the utterly useless and pointless climate deal signed in Paris in 2015 by Barack Obama,” Delingpole wrote. “If it’s just a case of casual daughter-pleasing, fine. But if he actually means it than we should all start to worry.” [54]

Delingpole adds that Ivanka and Jared Kushner are part of “the monstrously large group of special interests sometimes known as the Green Blob and sometimes as the Climate Industrial Complex.” He then went on to summarize what he observed from the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2017, featuring speeches from well known climate deniers including Tony Heller (aka Steven Goddard), Steve Milloy, Mark Mills, and Craig Idso: [54]

“So to recap:

“Man-made global warming is evidently and demonstrably not a problem.

“The people who pretend otherwise are crooks, liars, idiots or shills.

“CO2 does far more good than harm.

“Fossil fuels aren’t running out – especially not now we’ve discovered the game-changing technology of hydraulic fracturing – and are the ideal solution to our energy needs.

Renewables are a waste of everyone’s time – and always will be.”[54]

James Delingpole was a speaker on a CPAC 2017 panel sponsored by the Energy and Environment Legal Institute (E&E Legal) titled “Fake Climate News Camouflaging an Anti-Capitalist Agenda – and What President Trump Plans To Do About It,” according to the CPAC agenda (PDF). [55]

E&E News reported the panel included fellow climate change deniers Steve Milloy and Tony Heller (AKA Steven Goddard). [56]

In his discussion, Delingpole compared environmentalism to a religion and recycling advocates to a “cult.” Delingpole said the environmental movement was full of “control freaks” looking for justification “to tax us, to regulate us, to control our lives.” [56]

Delingpole said the treatment of climate change deniers would change under the Trump administration: [56]

The people who portray people like us as selfish, greedy, nature-hating scumbags — no. They are the scumbags. We are the good guys,” Delingpole said. “Thank goodness, thanks to Donald Trump, the tide’s turned, and we are about to witness that.” [56]

Delingpole also spoke on another CPAC session the following day where he interviewed Craig Idso of the CO2 Coalition. The panel was titled “The Benefits of Global Greening.” [55]

James Delingpole was an attendee at a private meeting also attended by Trump’s EPA Transition team lead Myron Ebell on Capitol Hill. E&E News reported the event was not open to the public or to the press and Ebell refused to give any details. The event was hosted by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) and held in the hearing room of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee. The EPW committee is chaired by Senator James Inhofe who, like Trump, has described human-caused climate change as a hoax. [48]

DeSmog reported the event featured the “Who’s Who of Climate Science Deniers.” Australian Senator Malcolm Roberts, who spoke at the event, also wrote that the meeting was a gathering of the Cooler Heads Coalition and listed some of the participants on Facebook: [49], [50]

According to an early memo, the group said “victory will be achieved when […] Average citizens ‘understand’ (recognize) uncertainties in climate science; recognition of uncertainties becomes part of the ‘conventional wisdom’.” [51]

James Delingpole wrote in the Spectator on how “It’s tough being the only British journalist who’s right about everything,” describing his prediction of a Trump presidency as well as his recruitment at Breitbart under Trump’s now-chief-strategist Steve Bannon. [46]

“One of his pet peeves is the great climate-change con,” Delingpole wrote of Bannon. “It’s partly why he recruited a notorious skeptic like myself.”

“Basically,” Delingpole wrote, “we won.”

ClimateWire wrote that Bannon and the Breitbart News Network will be influential withr egards to Donald Trump’s approach to climate cahnge. ClimateWire noted Delingpole, whose voice dominates the website’s climate change coverage, was recruited at Breitbart in 2014. In a New York Times interview, Bannon called Delingpole and another rcent hire as “real hell fighters in the Breitbart tradition.” [47]

Delingpole attended the Global Warming Policy Foundation’s (GWPF) annual lecture at the Royal Society in London. The GWPF‘s lecture was controversial given it was hosted at the Royal Society in London, which had reportedly been under internal pressure to cancel the booking. [52], [53]

Virgin Group invited Delingpole to speak on its Virgin podcast, where he went on to describe climate change as a “bankrupt theory,” Desmog reports. [18], [19]

Delingpole also claimed volcanoes “produce far more CO2” than humans. According to the US Geological Survey, humans actually produce about 100 times more carbon dioxide than volcanoes. Delingpole also claimed we are probably in a period of global cooling. [19], [20]

“Featuring James Delingpole was neither an endorsement of nor an agreement with his positions. In fact, it was made clear that Virgin Group does not share his view on climate change.” A Virgin Group spokesperson commented. [21]

March 2016

Delingpole gave a speech at the World Taxpayers’ Associations in Berlin, he reports at Breitbart. In his speech, he describes wind farms, “my hobby horse,” as being worth “pretty close to zero” without subsidies. [9]

“They’re inefficient; they kill birds and bats; they spoil views; they’re environmentally unfriendly – rare earth minerals from China; they’re hazardous; they’re expensive; they’re ugly (well I think they are….),” Delingpole writes. “They cause real people real misery.” [9]

James Delingpole announced in The Spectator that he was going to “put his money where his mouth is” and invest in a fund named Cool Futures with the aim of short-selling renewable energy stocks. Delingpole describes climate change as an “outrageous scam” and says he will bet “on the Big Short principle” and call “this rigged market’s bluff.” [22]

“If, as the Cool Futures Fund’s in-house experts believe, we’re entering a period of low solar activity akin to the Little Ice Age, then we’re in all manner of trouble: it will affect everything from the latitudes at which wheat can be grown to the kind of places we’ll wish to live in or go on holiday. But there will, of course, be opportunities amid the gloom: farmland will become more valuable; land reclamation in temperate zones will become a lucrative prospect; agricultural technology will become more pressing; and so on,” Delingpole wrote. [22]

According to Daily Kos, Delingpole failed to mention that fellow climate change denier Joanne Nova and her husband, David Edwards, were also involved in the fund. Delingpole also did not mention them in a separate writeup at Breitbart. Both pieces failed to mention that Chris Dawson, CEO of the Lord Monckton Foundation, had launched the fund. [23], [24]

Daily Kos also noted the Cool Futures Funds Management group offers a rather stange disclaimer, which states “No one may link to this website, or frame it, without Cool Futures Funds Management’s express written permission.”

In June 2016, Joanne Nova finally published about the new fund on her own blog, asking readers to donate money to get the Cayman Island-based hedge fund started. The Cool Futures Fund Management needs at least $375,000 to get off the ground, of which it has already raised $42,530, reported Daily Kos. [25], [26]

December 1, 2015 

James Delingpole wrote a blog on Breitbart.com celebrating the death of Maurice Strong, a respected Canadian businessman, diplomat and high-ranking United Nations official. Delingpole’s piece, titled “Ding Dong – The Godfather of Global Warming is Dead!“ described Maurice Strong: “he probably did more to make your world a more expensive, inconvenient, overregulated, hectored, bullied, lied-to, sclerotic, undemocratic place than anyone post Hitler, Stalin and (his personal friend) Mao.” [27]

(In sharp contrast, The New York Times obituary for Maurice Strong quoted UNEP executive director Achim Steiner crediting Strong with “making “history by launching a new era of international environmental diplomacy.”) [28]

James Delingpole went on the British news show Daily Politics to criticize Pope Francis’s Encyclical on the Environment. According to Delingpole, “Catholics should know that there is probably more strong evidence for the existence of God than there is for catastrophic man-made global warming.” [13]

March 2015

James Delingpole was one of several climate change skeptics cc’d on an email from S. Fred Singer in hopes of countering the documentary film “Merchants of Doubt,” which exposed the network of climate change skeptics and deniers trying to delay legislative action on climate change. [29]

The October, 2014 email was leaked to journalists before the documentary was released. “Can I sue for damages?” Singer asked in the email. “Can we get an injunction against the documentary?”

InsideClimate News reports in their article “Leaked Email Reveals Who’s Who List of Climate Denialists,” how “Many of those copied on the email thread, such as Singer and communications specialist Steven Milloy, have financial ties to the tobacco, chemical, and oil and gas industries and have worked to defend them since the 1990s.” [29]

James Delingpole published an article in The Telegraph titled “An English class for trolls, professional offence-takers and climate activists.” The article opens with a photo of one of the Nuremberg trials with the caption “Not pictured: Monbiot, Flannery, Mann…” (as in George Monbiot, Tim Flannery, and Michael Mann) and a series of questions (emphasis added): [32]

“Should George Monbiot be hanged by the neck for his decade or so’s hysterical promulgation of the great climate change scam and other idiocies too numerous to mention?

“Should Tim Flannery be fed to the crocodiles for the role he has played in the fleecing of the Australian taxpayer and the diversion of scarce resources into pointless projects like all the eyewateringly expensive desalination plants built as a result of his doomy prognostications about water shortages caused by catastrophic anthropogenic global warming?”

While Delingpole wrote his answer to all of these questions was no, he also said that “Hanging is far too good for such ineffable toerags” and that “Indeed, it would be nice to think one day that there would be a Climate Nuremberg.” He defended his statements by claiming that he was using the phrases “metaphorically.” [14]

Joe Romm at Thinkprogress suggested the Telegraph should retract and apologize for Delingpole’s article as it may violate the paper’s own terms and conditions against “obscene, threatening, menacing, offensive, defamatory, [or] abusive” material. [12]

According to Romm,

“If Delingpole’s piece doesn’t count as ‘threatening, menacing, offensive, defamatory, abusive’ then it is quite safe to say that nothing does. It should be retracted, the Telegraph should issue an apology and then fire him.”

March 8, 2013

James Delingpole published an article in the Daily Mail describing the Met Office as a “menace” and also claiming that the office has “finally conceded what other scientists have known for ages: there is no evidence that ‘global warming’ is happening.” [33]

Delingpole quoted the Global Warming Policy Foundation’s “Academic Advisor,” David Whitehouse, who claimed that the Met Office was “panicking” because “All the predictions they’ve been making about man-made global warming these past 20 years have started to come crashing about their ears.” [33]

The Met Office replied to Delingpole, and attempted to correct “a series of factual inaccuracies about the Met Office and its science” that Delingpole’s article had included. According to the Met office, these inaccuracies included: [34]

• Mr Delingpole then inaccurately states that the Met Office has conceded ‘there is no evidence that ‘global warming’ is happening’. We have not said this at any point.
• He also states that the Met Office was trying to defend a narrative that the “the past ten years have been the ‘wettest decade ever’”. Again, this is not something the Met Office has ever said.
• Also he quotes David Whitehouse of the Global Warming Policy Foundation saying that the Met Office ‘thinks weather forecasting is beneath it’ and that ‘climate change… brings in more money’.
  A cursory glance at our annual report and accounts (pdf) would reveal weather forecasting represents the vast majority of the Met Office’s contractual work on behalf of the public.

December 2012

The Australian Press Council (APC) upheld a complaint on numerous grounds against The Australian newspaper, which had published an article by Delingpole about wind farms. In the article, Delingpole had quoted an anonymous sheep farmer as saying that the wind farm industry was “bloody well near a pedophile ring. They’re f . . king our families and knowingly doing so.” [35], [2]

After the APC had published its findings, Delingpole wrote a response, also published in The Australian, where he said: “I stand by every word of the piece – especially the bit about pedophiles. I would concede that the analogy may be somewhat offensive to the pedophile community.” [36]

September 2012

James Delingpole issued a public appeal for people to donate money to the Institute of Public Affairs, an Australian free-market “think tank” which has refused to disclose its funders. [37] 

DeSmog reported how the IPA has been at the forefront of pushing climate science misinformation in Australia since the late 1980s. According to Delingpole, the IPA had paid for him to travel to Australia to promote his book. [38]

June 2011

James Delingpole was a speaker at the Heartland Institute‘s Sixth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC6). [15] His speech, titled “Watermelons: The Green Movement’s True Colours” can be viewed below. 

Research done by DesmogBlog found that 17 of the 43 sponsors of the Heartland Institute’s Sixth International Conference on Climate Change, including the Heartland Institute itself, have collectively received over $46 million from either Scaife family foundations, Koch Industries family foundations, or ExxonMobil and its foundation. 

January 25, 2011

James Delingpole was one of the subjects of a BBC Two presentation titled “Science Under Attack” where Nobel Prize winning Sir Paul Nurse examined why climate change and other scientific theories have had public trust eroded.  [39]

He interviewed scientists and campaigners from both sides of the climate change debate. Delingpole complained about the editing of his interview with Nurse because it focused on parts of the interview where, according to the Guardian, “he looks like an idiot.” [40]

This included Delingpole’s explanation of why he never reads peer-reviewed scientific literature because “It’s not my job.” The program also focused on Delingpole’s condemnation of the scientific consensus on global warming. [40]

May 2010

James Delingpole was a speaker at the Heartland Institute‘s Fourth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC4). His speech was titled “Climategate and the War against Man, Bear, Pig.” Video below. [41]

DeSmog has done research on the co-sponsors of the conference and found that 19 of the 65 sponsors (including Heartland itself) have received a total of over $40 million in funding since 1985 from ExxonMobil, Koch Industries family foundations or the Scaife family foundations.   

June 22, 2010

James Delingpole described an article on expert credibility in climate change, written by William R.L. Anderegg and others and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as being “based on a petty, spiteful, Stasi-like blacklist produced by an obscure Canadian warmist – outrageously aggrandised by being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” [42]

Delingpole’s article on the paper was titled “‘Climate change sceptics have smaller members, uglier wives, dumber kids’ says new study made up by warmists.” [43]

November 20, 2009

James Delingpole has been credited with coining the term “Climategate” to describe what climate skeptics have presented as a scientific conspiracy to manipulate data carried out by climate scientists. The scandal arose from a series of hacked e-mails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia. [44]

Climate scientists were since exonerated of any wrongdoing after a series of investigations into the subject, but climate change skeptics continue to describe the event as proof of a conspiracy. [45]
