  • M.Sc., Earth Sciences, University of Waterloo (1977). [1]
  • B.Sc., Geological Sciences, Queen’s University (1975). [1]

Fred Michel is an associate professor at the University of Carleton’s Earth Science department and a director of the Institute of Environmental Science. [2]

He is on Senator Inhofe’s list of “prominent scientists” who dispute man-made global warming.

Stance on Climate Change

“In reality, climate is constantly changing and will continue to change no matter what we do.” [3]

Key Quotes

“The success of the human species has been largely due to its ability to adapt to environmental changes. With the evolution of megacities, we now seem to feel that we are powerful enough to change the environment at our whim. Hurricane Katrina’s devastating impact on New Orleans should have been a wake-up call to the fact that we must still be ready to adapt to environmental change, including climate variations. Instead, it has been used by alarmists to promote their impossible goal of ‘stopping climate change.’” [4]

Key Deeds

March 4, 2008

Michel is a “Qualified Endorser” of the Manhattan Declaration on Climate Science, a document presented at the end of the Heartland Institute‘s 2008 International Conference on Climate Change. [5]

The Manhattan Declaration states that “global warming is not a global crisis.” Those who sign also agree that “there is no convincing evidence that CO2 emissions from modern industrial activity has in the past, is now, or will in the future cause catastrophic climate change.”

March 2–4, 2008

Michel was a speaker (PDF) at the Heartland Institute‘s first International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC1) which rallied together climate change deniers from across the country.

His speech was titled “The Great Arctic Meltdown.” [6]

December 13, 2007

Michel signed a 2007 open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon which argues that “the current UN focus on ‘fighting climate change’ … is distracting governments from adapting to the threat of inevitable natural climate changes.” [7]

April 2006

Michel was one of the signatories of the 2006 open letter to Prime Minister Harper that urged inaction on climate policy and denied the existence of human-caused global warming.

According to a search of Google Scholar, Fred Michael has not published any articles in peer-reviewed journals on the subject of climate change, although he has published over 20 research articles on the subject of hydrogeology.
