Background

Jane M. Orient is the president of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP), executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), and a policy advisor at The Heartland Institute.2JANE M. ORIENT, M.D.The Heartland Institute. Archived September 14, 2021. Archive URL: https://archive.md/2P5ZQ

Orient is also listed as a medical advisor at the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM), and was formerly on the scientific advisory board of the corporate-funded American Council on Science and Health (ACSH).3“CURRICULUM VITAE, Jane M. Orient, M.D” (PDF), retrieved from DrJaneOrient.com. Archived .pdf on file at DeSmog.

OISM is known for its role in developing the Oregon Petition, a statement disputing the existence of man-made climate change. When it first circulated in 1998, the petition had about 15,000 signatories. The number eventually grew to just over 31,000 – and an analysis  found that only 39 of them had a qualification related to climate science.4How the OISM Petition Project casts doubt on the scientific consensus on climate change,” Skeptical Science. Orient has claimed that man-made CO2 emissions cannot dramatically affect Earth’s climate, and alleged that there is a dangerous and “radical political agenda being promoted under cover of ‘saving the planet.'”6The Physician and ‘Climate Change’,” Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, Vol. 24 No. 4 (Winter 2019). During the COVID-19 pandemic, Orient has consistently questioned the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. In 2021 she was senior editor of an AAPS “Guide to Home-Based COVID Treatment,” which recommended using ineffective medications like hydroxychloroquine, and ivermectin, as well as zinc or other vitamins, to treat the virus.7Hydroxychloroquine does not benefit adults hospitalized with COVID-19,” National Institutes of Health, November 9, 2020. Association of American Physicians and Surgeons

In a November 2009 article titled “The Tea Party’s Favorite Doctors,” Mother Jones profiled the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). The reporting noted that AAPS had recently co-sponsored a protest against with the Tea Party against the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare.9Stephanie Mencimer. “The Tea Party’s Favorite Doctors,” Mother Jones, November 18, 2009. Archived September 14, 2021. Archive URL: https://archive.md/dsniK

“[D]espite the lab coats and the official-sounding name, the docs of the AAPS are hardly part of mainstream medical society. Think Glenn Beck with an MD,” wrote reporter Stephanie Mencimer.

“Some of its former leaders were John Birchers, and its political philosophy comes straight out of Ayn Rand. Its general counsel is Andrew Schlafly, son of the legendary conservative activist Phyllis. The AAPS statement of principles declares that it is ‘evil’ and ‘immoral’ for physicians to participate in Medicare and Medicaid, and its journal is a repository for quackery. Its website features claims that tobacco taxes harm public health and electronic medical records are a form of ‘data control’ like that employed by the East German secret police. An article on the AAPS website speculated that Barack Obama may have won the presidency by hypnotizing voters, especially cohorts known to be susceptible to ‘neurolinguistic programming’—that is, according to the writer, young people, educated people, and possibly Jews.”

According to Mother Jones, the archives of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons Journal, the organization’s flagship publication, “present a kind of alternate-universe scientific world, in which abortion causes breast cancer and vaccines cause autism, but HIV does not cause AIDS. Cutting carbon emissions represents a grave threat to global health (because environmental regulation would make people poorer and, consequently, sicker). In 2005, the journal erroneously claimed that illegal immigration had caused a leprosy epidemic in the US, a claim that was reported as fact in more mainstream outlets such as Lou Dobbs’ show.”

In a 1995 document held by the Truth Tobacco Industry Documents archive at the University of California, San Francisco, a representative from the Washington Legal Foundation‘s “Health Care Project” described AAPS as a “conservative, pro-free enterprise, anti-big brother government” organization10Anthony A. Stance on Climate Change

2019

In an op-ed published in the Winter 2019 edition of the AAPS publication Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons,The Physician and ‘Climate Change’,” Jane Orient wrote:25The Physician and ‘Climate Change’,” Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, Vol. 24 No. 4 (Winter 2019). Archived .pdf on file at DeSmog.:

“There is an existential threat related to climate, as Climate Strike activists claim, but it comes from the radical political agenda being promoted under cover of ‘saving the planet.’ The evidence refutes the claim that human emissions of carbon dioxide can catastrophically disrupt the Earth’s climate. Continuing to spend trillions of dollars to ‘fight climate change’ will have no effect on the climate and cannot meet human energy needs with ‘renewables.’

“The existential threat is to our freedom, our prosperity, our capacity to provide medical care, and the integrity of our science and our profession. Physicians need to evaluate evidence independently and shun groupthink. They must not sacrifice their patients’ welfare to serve an agenda.”

Orient was signatory on a petition opposing calls to remove Rebekah Mercer from the board of the American Museum of Natural History. Text of the letter:26AMNH18-Feb4-PetitionLetter (PDF). Retrieved from Doctors for Disaster Prepardes. Archived .pdf on file at DeSmog.

“The American Museum of Natural History has a long and honorable tradition of enlightening the world at large with outstanding scientific exhibits and public lectures.

“But now there are agitators waving signs in front of the Museum. They are vilifying a scientifically-engaged trustee, Rebekah Mercer, who helps make these exhibits possible with generous donations. Ms. Mercer’s family foundation also supports politicians the agitators despise, and organizations or scientists with views contrary to their belief in human-caused, catastrophic global warming.

“The signers of this letter include many scientists, with a deep understanding of climate. The case for harm from catastrophic global warming is growing weaker as more is learned about the Earth’s climate system, and about the poor predictive power of computer climate models. The Earth has supported abundant life many times in the geological past when there were much higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It is quite likely that future generations will benefit from the enrichment of Earth’s atmosphere with more carbon dioxide. And there is no doubt that policies advocated by many of the protestors will cause economic harm across the world, especially to those hoping to climb out of poverty.

“It is unlikely that Ms. Mercer and all of the signers would vote for the same political candidates. But all of us urge the Museum trustees not to cave in to this pressure. Make no mistake, the agitators are not defending science from quackery—quite the contrary! They demand that the Museum support a party line, thinly disguised as science.”

September 20, 2014

An AAPS press release opposing Obama administration carbon emission rules quoted Jane Orient:27(Press Release). “Attack on Coal Will Not Save Lives, States AAPS,” Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, September 20, 2014. Archived September 20, 2021. Archive URL: https://archive.ph/iYlEN

“The adverse health effects of Obama’s promised skyrocketing of the costs of electricity, not to mention unemployment, are simply being ignored.”

Regarding recent comments by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the rules would reduce respiratory illness in children as well as addressing climate change, the released quoted Orient:

“‘This ‘two-fer’ also depends on conflating two entirely different forms of carbon,’ stated Orient. 1And there is no actual evidence that shutting off all coal-fired electricity (40% of the total) would either make the climate more benign or help asthmatics.’”

Stance on Evolution

Jane Orient signed a 2001 petition titled “A Scientific Dissent from Darwinism,” organized by the Discovery Institute, that declared in part:28A Scientific Dissent from Darwinism” (PDF), Discovery Institute, May 2021.

“We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged.”

Stance on COVID-19

2020

Orient wrote in the Winter 2020 edition of the AAPS publication Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons:

“The research protocols that have been released by leading vaccine manufacturers are not designed to show whether the vaccines prevent transmission, hospitalizations, or deaths, but only whether they reduce symptoms,” writes William Haseltine. Of course, they cannot stop the pandemic unless they do halt transmission. Is vaccination more or less effective than pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis (PreP or PEP), modeled on protocols for HIV/AIDS? A trial with a head-to head comparison would be needed.

“How safe are the vaccines? It is of course impossible to rule out long-term complications when testing has lasted only a few months. The most important is the effect on fertility, which would require years to manifest. The published protocols do not mention how this will be monitored. This is especially concerning when governments are apparently determined to vaccinate most of the world’s population over a very short period.”

February 19, 2019

Jane Orient tweeted on childhood vaccination requirements:

“The ‘new’ way is probably the old way: if you can’t persuade them, use force. Meanwhile, 127+ children are getting robust, lifelong immunity the old way. And how many adverse vaccine reactions have there been? It’s a trade-off. Let parents decide.”

Key Quotes

September 2014

“’Hillary apparently doesn’t know the difference between soot and CO2,’ quipped Jane Orient, MD, and president of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness. She continued: ‘And the American Lung Association pretends it doesn’t. No one can claim that the tiny increase in CO2 from fueled generating stations increases asthma—just being indoors with other breathing humans increases CO2 much more and doesn’t cause asthma.’

“Orient went on to explain: ‘Some very bad studies of associations between high air pollution days and “premature” deaths are used to extrapolate as with the liner no-threshold radiation hypothesis—lots of diesel exhaust may provoke an asthma attack, therefore a vanishingly small increase in soot affecting many people will cause some asthma. Some dust is soot, which is carbon, quod erat demonstratum (that proves it).’ She added: ‘Unemployment, poverty, high electricity bills don’t figure into the calculation.'”

August 2013

During her welcoming speech at the 31st annual meeting of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, Jane Orient brought up a number of quotes from the Bible as possible explanations for “the war on coal,” as well as to interpret events surrounding the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001:30DDP 2013 Welcome Message – Jane Orient, MD,” YouTube video uploaded by user DDPmeetings, August 16, 2013. Archived .mp4 on file at DeSmog.

Jane Orient: [00:13:54] I really got upset about 9:19 through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened. And what do we have happening now? The president destroying our coal industry, which happens to produce 40 percent of our electricity. Of course, we do not do what the ancient Israelites did. We don’t kill our prophets, although we do get them defunded and fired from their jobs and we do talk about maybe they deserve the death penalty. I don’t think it’s been meted out just yet, at least not officially. But Peter Beckman warned us about the dangers of the green established church. Are we worshiping idols now? [00:14:32][37.8]

Jane Orient: [00:14:34] What about the science? This is what we call the science is based on consensus, peer reviewed dogmas, orthodoxy. I talk to a medical student recently. I think he’s afraid to talk to me anymore about how he’s afraid he could not get an orthopedics residency if he expressed skepticism or denialism about certain things that you have to believe in, such as the human caused CO2 induced catastrophe. So we have anathemas today. But we need to remember what the real foundations of science are, that you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. And the method of science is not building models and making up theories, but observation and experiment prove all things hold fast, that which is good. [00:15:23][48.8]

Jane Orient: [00:15:24] I asked a very prominent Muslim one time. Is there any basis in the Koran about you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free and he couldn’t really answer the question. So where are we today? Well, I think we’re maybe going along the path to destruction. I hope that at this meeting you will learn something about some real prophets who are trying to tell us the truth about our science and set us back on the right path. [00:15:51][27.0]

Key Actions

September 20, 2021

The AAPS journal published an article by climate denier Marc Morano titled “COVID-19 as a Model for the Climate Change Agenda.” 31(Press Release).”COVID-19 Called a Model for the Climate-Change Agenda in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons,” Pr Newswire, September 20, 2021. Archived September 20, 2021. Archive URL:https://archive.ph/ynNwz

“A merging of COVID and climate may just be the left’s ticket to a Soviet-style regulatory state,” Morano claimed in the article. “I noted in 2020 that if you like living under coronavirus fears and government-mandated lockdowns, then you’ll love living under a climate emergency”

Morano also promoted “The Great Reset,” which has become a popular conspiracy theory:

“I predict that climate change is going to shift to being part of the public health crisis,” Morano wrote. “Now we have the chance for a white lab coat dictatorship to dictate public policy. Governors are beholden to the medical science bureaucracy telling them what they must do.

“Net Zero is going to be part of a global lockdown, a permanent one. The hope originally was that the lockdowns would last 2 to 3 weeks, to ‘flatten the curve,’ and then would end. Some people said they would end after the November 2020 election. Wrong. It’s a global phenomenon. It is bigger than Trump, bigger than Biden, bigger than any U.S. election.”

Morano concluded with a call to action:

“Is there a silent majority that will awaken and fight back against climate and COVID hysteria? Are there elected officials in either party ready to lead? […] We have reason, logic, and science on our side. We need only courage, resolve, and hard work, and we will prevail.”

August 28, 2021

Jane Orient was a co-editor of the AAPS publication “A Guide to Home-Based COVID Treatment.” The guide’s home care recommendations include vitamin D supplements and “direct sunshine for 10-20 minutes twice a day,” Vitamin C, and zinc, and erroneously compares COVID-19 to the flu:32“A Guide to Home-Based COVID Treatment” (PDF), The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, August 28, 2021. Archived .pdf on file at DeSmog.

“[A]pproximately 99.9%+ of individuals who contract COVID will have mild to moderate symptoms and recover, just like with the flu. The majority of deaths are coming from the 0.62% of the population who are in nursing home facilities.”

The guide takes a skeptical approach to being tested for COVID:

“Should you get a COVID test when you develop symptoms? That is a choice between you and your
doctor. If you do decide to test, be aware of the test’s limitations.”

In addition to zinc and vitamins, the guide specifically recommends hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin for treatment—both discredited as COVID treatments.

The guide makes a number of unfounded claims about COVID vaccinations, and misleadingly compares flu vaccine effectiveness with AAPS’s medication and vitamin recommendations:

“Even the best vaccines for flu are only about 30-60% effective. Compare that with an effectiveness for
improvement ranging from 64% to more than 90% in more than 100 new studies showing early, outpatient treatment for COVID-19 with our existing medications.”

The AAPS document also suggests with no evidence that COVID vaccines could have “delayed side effects (e.g., infertility, cancer, autoimmune diseases)” that “may not be seen for years.”

Among those listed as “physician contributors” to the AAPS document is Stella Immanuel, known for her involvement in America’s Frontline Doctors, a group that promoted misinformation around the COVID-19 pandemic. America’s Frontline Doctors is associated with Jenny Beth Martin,33Anatomy of Deceit: Team Trump Deploys Doctors with Dubious Qualifications to Push Fake Cure for Covid-19,” The Washington Spectator, September 20, 2020. Immanuel had a history of “making bizarre claims about medical topics and other issues,” including “that gynecological problems like cysts and endometriosis are in fact caused by people having sex in their dreams with demons and witches,” that “alien DNA is currently used in medical treatments, and that scientists are cooking up a vaccine to prevent people from being religious,” and that “the government is run in part not by humans but by ‘reptilians’ and other aliens.” 34Will Sommer. “Trump’s New Favorite COVID Doctor Believes in Alien DNA, Demon Sperm, and Hydroxychloroquine,” The Daily Beast, July 28., 2020. While Orient describes these journals as “refereed,” some track back to AAPS itself and appear to be primarily available through the AAPS website.

For example, Medical Sentinel is published by AAPS and describes itself as “dedicated to the pursuit of liberty, free markets, and integrity in medical research, particularly research impacting on current socioeconomic and political issues affecting public policy in general and health care in particular.”

AAPS also describes Medical Sentinel as a “a registered trademark of Hacienda Publishing, Inc.” According to Hacienda’s website, “Hacienda Publishing is not a strictly conservative or libertarian website, although generally we fit on that side of the political spectrum, and we usually carry a conservative political message.”58About Us,” Hacienda Publishing.
